description
This course takes a comprehensive approach to spelling by developing morphological awareness-the ability to identify meaningful parts of words (morphemes) including prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Research shows that morphological awareness is the strongest predictor of success for reading comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling. Students will also learn techniques to master grade-level sight words. Another component of this course is a study of grammar concepts relating to phrases, clauses, compound-complex sentences, and other high level concepts (as well as basics). Concepts are introduced, reintroduced, applied, and expanded on throughout the year to aid in mastery.
